*** Important update on the Whitby Thank You Weekend 23/9/20 ***
The Whitby Thank You Weekend organising team meet regularly to manage the logistics of the weekend and importantly to monitor the situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and how the virus is spreading within the UK. The team met on 23rd September and decided that the Whitby Thank You Weekend will proceed as planned on the 2nd of October 2020.
This was a unanimous decision, and our logic is as follows:
The Whitby Thank You Weekend organising team meet regularly to manage the logistics of the weekend and importantly to monitor the situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and how the virus is spreading within the UK. The team met on 23rd September and decided that the Whitby Thank You Weekend will proceed as planned on the 2nd of October 2020.
This was a unanimous decision, and our logic is as follows:
- The current restrictions as at 23rd September 2020 do not prevent anyone from travelling and having a holiday. Even the tighter local restrictions, where households are not permitted to socialise do not prevent people from having a break away from home.
- If we cancelled or delayed the event, it is likely that most of the properties would open them to paying bookings and they would then be booked up by the normal stay over guests. This means that the town would have a similar number of people coming to stay, doing the same sort of things. This therefore makes the effect of the Thank You Weekend broadly neutral as its either one set of guests or another. There is also an argument to say that the NHS guests could be even safer than normal paying guests because they are specialists and are very aware of how to cope with infection control plus, they are tested for Covid-19 frequently.
- The businesses within the town have made significant investment of time and money to provide a Covid Secure service and so provided everyone continues to keep to the social distancing rules and Covid secure protocols, then everything should be OK.
- Even though there is a curfew, the town can still provide a lovely break for people to relax, enjoy their free accommodation, free meal, free drinks and take in the fresh air. In other words, the town can provide a good quality of experience for the NHS guests.
- Re-organising for a later date, for example March 2021, would be a major undertaking and we have no certainty that things will be any better at that point.
